Minimum Wage Must Be Enforced

2.12.59pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 16th Mar 2004

Following the announcement that the minimum wage is to be increased by 35p and a £3 minimum wage set for 16 and 17 years olds, Gordon Liberal Democrat MP Malcolm Bruce said:

"In many situations 16 and 17 year olds will be doing exactly the same job, and holding as much responsibility, as 18 year olds. As such, they should be receiving the same wage.

"Workers have the right to expect a minimum wage. But with this right comes a responsibility to report employers who flout the law. Non-compliance leaves law abiding businesses facing an up hill struggle to compete on a level playing field with unscrupulous employers.

"Adequate enforcement of the minimum wage is needed for the protection of employees and employers alike."
