Civil Partnerships are a Positive Step

12.57.53pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 31st Mar 2004

Malcolm Bruce MP, Liberal Democrat DTI spokesman, responding to the publication of the Civil Partnerships Bill, said:

"Critics of the bill should explain why same-sex couples, who have signed legal undertakings should not be allowed shared property, pension and next-of-kin rights.

"The Liberal Democrats recognise that many heterosexual couples that live together want protection of their rights too, but welcome this bill as a vital step towards a more tolerant society and view the bill's speedy adoption as a priority."
