3.30.30pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 14th Jul 2005

Responding to his election as Chair of the International Development Select Committee, Malcolm Bruce, Liberal Democrat MP for Gordon, said:

"I am delighted to be elected as the Chair of the Committee. My colleagues and I have already agreed that our first task will be to follow up the communiqué published by G8 leaders earlier this month.

"Will be seeking meetings with the United Nations, the IMF, and the World Bank, as well as taking evidence from Hilary Benn, Make Poverty History, and if possible campaigners such as Bob Geldof and Bono.

"The Committee also hopes to hear evidence from all the interested parties ahead of the next round of WTO trade talks in Hong Kong in December."
