Malcolm Bruce Leads Cross-Party MP Delegation to meet Met Office Minister

Gordon Liberal Democrat MP Malcolm Bruce has confirmed that will be leading a cross-party delegation of MPs to put concerns about the proposed closure of Aberdeen Met Office direct to the Minister responsible. The meeting with Don Touhig MP, the Minister in charge of the Met Office, will be held on Monday 18th July at 19.15.

Commenting on the planned meeting, Mr Bruce said:

"The Minister has made it clear that the final decision on the closure of Aberdeen Met Office is his and I intend to use this opportunity to relay the many concerns that have been raised with me about it. The closure of the Aberdeen Met Office has shocked people not just in my constituency and the surrounding area, but from across Scotland.

"I will press home to the Minister the danger of losing staff who have expert knowledge of Scotland's weather patterns if the Aberdeen office closed. The Met Office as a whole will also be hit by the loss of the revenue generated by this very successful weather centre.

"The weather in Scotland is notoriously extreme and changeable. Public agencies like the police, mountain rescue, air traffic control and coastguards all rely on accurate, up-to-date and expert weather information. Closing the last Scottish Met Office will inevitably have a detrimental effect on Met Office services."
