Cautious welcome for new Aberdeen Met Office proposal, but we need to know more - BRUCE

3.32.07pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 25th Oct 2005

Commenting on today's announcement that the consultation on the future of the Aberdeen Met Office is to be extended to 15th November 2005 to take account of an alternative option for the Weather Centre, Gordon Liberal Democrat MP Malcolm Bruce said:

"Before we can give a verdict on the new option before us we need to know more about what is actually proposed. Specifically, whether this new option includes the retention of an operational forecasting facility at Aberdeen to allow the Aberdeen forecasters to continue providing the current high standard of customised forecasting long into the future.

"I have spoken with the Minister in charge of the consultation and he has agreed to meet with me and other MPs so that this new proposal can be discussed in more depth.

"Our priority remains the continuation of the Aberdeen Weather Centre as a fully operational forecasting site providing accurate weather information to the North East and the rest of Scotland."
