Bruce Pledges Support to Additional Don Bridge

3.18.44pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 12th May 2006

Gordon Liberal Democrat MP Malcolm Bruce has today written to Aberdeen City Council to express his support for a new Don bridge crossing.

Ahead of the Council's Planning Committee meeting on Thursday, Mr Bruce has written to Chief Executive, Douglas Paterson, highlighting the necessity to resolve an issue which has been ongoing for thirty years.

Mr Bruce said:

"Since I first represented this area in 1983 the expansion of Bridge of Don, and towns to the north of Aberdeen such as Ellon and Balmedie, has been immense. It is clear that the current transport infrastructure cannot cope, and this bottleneck is affecting the city's economy, local air quality and the reliability of public transport.

I strongly support public transport and park and ride initiatives but I firmly believe that a third bridge over the River Don is essential to reduce congestion, and the overwhelming majority of my constituents share this view. In reality, this should have happened years ago and I hope that it can now be processed to a successful outcome."
