Bruce seeks assurances over airport's future

3.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 7th Jun 2006

Following the announcement of the British Airports Authority's (BAA) takeover bid by the Spanish group, Ferrovial, local MP, Malcolm Bruce is to meet with Andy Flowers, manager of Aberdeen Airport to discuss the implications a successful takeover bid will have on the airport's long-term future.

The airport in Dyce is in Mr Bruce's constituency. Commenting Mr Bruce said:

"I appreciate that although it appears that Ferrovial is likely to be the preferred and successful bidder, the takeover is not yet complete. However, many questions need to be considered if this takeover is given the green light.

"In addition to the current expansion of traffic at the airport, terminal improvements and proposed development plans for the airport are all clearly critical for the airport's future. As any new bidder will have borrowed heavily, it is my fear that future investment may be prejudiced or that Aberdeen Airport may be sold off from the group.

"It is essential that in either circumstance there is no downgrading of the airport or its potential. That is why as the constituency MP for the airport I am meeting with management before the new ownership is determined and I will hope to meet with any new management once confirmed for further discussions."
