Nuclear energy is an 'arrow in the heart' for renewables- Bruce

12.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 11th Jul 2006

Speaking ahead of the Government's release of the long-awaited Energy Review later today, Gordon MP Malcolm Bruce said:

"In a sense the nuclear issue is marginal in terms of what it will contribute to our energy needs but devastating in terms of what it will cost."

"Britain must develop a combined approach which includes optimising development of the UK Continental Shelf's oil & gas resources and promoting energy efficiency measures including Combined Heat and Power, in addition to further research into other renewable sources of energy. Such an approach has a far greater potential for long term energy security at a significantly lower cost."

"The skewing of the debate in favour of nuclear will drive an arrow in the heart of renewable alternatives."
