Malcolm Bruce MP welcomes 'historic' vote to reform House of Lords12.09.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 7th Mar 2007
Aberdeenshire MP Malcolm Bruce has welcomed last night's 'historic' vote at Westminster for a predominately-elected House of Lords. Members of Parliament held a series of votes yesterday on measures to reform the second chamber. Each vote called for a certain proportion of elected members to be introduced. The local MP joined his Liberal Democrat colleagues in voting for at least four out of five members of the upper house to be elected. He also supported the vote for a wholly elected House of Lords. Both measures gained a majority of support. Speaking from Westminster after the votes, Mr Bruce said: "This was an historic series of votes and I am delighted that MPs from all sides joined together to call for the modernisation of the House of Lords. "We have been in a situation of limbo for far too long. In fact modernisation of the House of Lords began 100 years ago. We must not lose momentum once again - the Leader of the House, Jack Straw, should bring forward reforms as soon as possible."
