Bruce welcomes Scottish lead on International Development4.19.17pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 28th Jun 2007
On learning of the appointment of Douglas Alexander as Secretary of State for International Development today (Thursday), Gordon MP and Chair of the International Development Committee, Malcolm Bruce MP said: "I welcome Douglas Alexander's appointment to the Department for International Development and also the news that DfiD looks set to be beefed up. My Committee previously asked the new Prime Minister to consider appointing a third minister to a Department that has a significant budget in Government and whose work engages so many members of the public. "I look forward to taking evidence and engaging with Douglas Alexander and his ministerial team in due course. "Given the importance of the DfID's headquarters in East Kilbride, where I have been today, the profile of the International Development Department in Scotland will be considerably raised by having a Scottish MP at its head."
