The Climate Change Bill is to receive a second reading in the House of Lords today

Commenting on the Second Reading of the Climate Change Bill in the House of Lords today, Gordon MP, Malcolm Bruce said:

"The current version of this Bill calls for carbon dioxide emissions to be cut by 60% by 2050. Quite simply this does not go far enough and even Gordon Brown has expressed his concerns on whether the proposed 60% target is too low. I hope their Lordships will move to make amendments to strengthen the legislation and look forward to the Bill reaching the House of Commons for further scrutiny in due course.

"The Kyoto protocol expires in 2012 and while international community muddles it's way to formulating a new protocol for the next generation, the UK must lead from the front and work with European partners to secure a stronger commitment for tackling global climate change through year-on-year binding targets and a reduction for all greenhouse gases, not just carbon dioxide."
