Bruce backs 'Winter Warmer' Campaign12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 27th Dec 2007 Malcolm Bruce MP is backing the 'winter warmer' campaign over the Christmas break to alert householders in the North East of the need to protect their pipes from the current cold weather.
Scottish Water is advising local people of a number of easy steps they can take to help reduce the risk of having problems with their pipes. These include: leaving the heating on a low setting at home if you are going away for a short period over the Christmas and New Year break; fitting your water tank with an insulation jacket or wrapping the top and sides with insulation material; get leaking taps or valves repaired as dripping water increases the risk of freezing; fitting draught excluders to windows and doors.
Lending his support to the campaign, Mr Bruce said:
"Spending some time now on protecting your home in the current cold climate can save a lot of trouble and expense in the long-run. The recent plummeting temperatures will increase the likelihood of frozen pipes and a burst pipe can cause misery for people trying to contact various plumbers and electricians in an emergency. People should make sure they have the telephone numbers of their local plumber, electrician and insurer in case of emergencies over the festive period."
