Malcolm Bruce has welcomed the decision to offer a commemorative badge for WLA and WTC members.

Gordon MP Malcolm Bruce has welcomed the announcement that former members of the Women's Land Army and Women's Timber Corps are to be offered a commemorative badge in recognition of their service during the two World Wars.

The scheme is open to any member of the Women's Land Army or Women's Timber Corps who served in either the First or Second World War.

The Women's Land Army (WLA), or 'Land Girls' provided a great service during wartime in maintaining food production whilst men went off to fight for their country. The lesser known Women's Timber Corps, known as the 'Lumber Jills' also worked tirelessly to provide timber for the war effort.

Malcolm Bruce said:

"Following on from the successful Veteran's badge campaign, this announcement is a welcome recognition of the key role that both Land Girls and Lumber Jills played in maintaining the Home Front and in the war effort as a whole.

"Anyone who wishes to apply for a badge can either do so by visiting the DEFRA website http://www.defra.gov.uk/farm/working/wla/ or by contacting my office.

"I hope that this announcement will prompt the Government to recognise other requests such as the Arctic medal campaign."
