MP calls for Gordon schools to sign up to Fairtrade2.07.09pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 19th Feb 2008
Malcolm Bruce, the Gordon MP is urging all local schools to sign up to the Fairtrade Schools scheme. In anticipation of Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from 25 February to 9 March Mr Bruce has written to every school in the Gordon constituency to urge them to begin the process of becoming a 'Fairtrade School'. Mr Bruce has also offered to visit schools to talk to pupils about Fairtrade issues and about his own experiences of how Fairtrade benefits developing countries, in light of his role as the Chair of the Parliamentary International Development Select Committee. Malcolm Bruce said: "There is already strong support for Fairtrade in the constituency- particularly in Ellon which achieved its Fairtrade town status in 2006. Given the range of products available nowadays and the growth in Fairtrade initiatives, it has never been easier to buy Fairtrade. As part of Fairtrade Fortnight I hope parents and teachers will join me in encouraging school pupils to ask more questions about how our shopping choices impact on different communities around the world, particularly in developing countries."
