Government could have avoided Coastguard strike- say North East MPs

1.36.36pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 6th Mar 2008

Commenting on the coastguards strike, the first of its kind, which has led to the closure of rescue centres across the country and Maritime and Coastguard Agency staff picket lines, two North East MPs have added their concerns. Malcolm Bruce MP and Robert Smith MP both have significant coastlines in their constituencies.

Robert Smith, MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine said:

Coastguard Helicopter

Malcolm Bruce & Robert Smith have voiced their concerns at recent strike action at Maritime and Coastguard Agency Rescue Centres.

"It is very disappointing that the Minister did not reach an agreement before strike action commenced.  There is real concern in coastal communities for their safety, and fears that the contingency plans said to be in place will not be sufficient"

Malcolm Bruce, the Gordon MP added:

"Following earlier talks with the Union, we raised our concerns with the Transport minister, Jim Fitzpatrick. What we should remember is that coastguards are not asking for simply a pay increase, but for a pay correction which will bring recognition for the invaluable work they do in line with the other emergency services."
