The rise in spirit duty could undermine Scotland's ability to export to key markets

Gordon MP Malcolm Bruce has expressed concerns following the Chancellor's announcement in the Budget statement today that the increase of duty on spirits will add a further 55p onto the price of a bottle of Scotch whisky.

Mr Bruce said:

"This hike in whisky duty is worrying as it will reduce Scotland's export potential and the industry's ability to get import tariffs reduced in key markets such as India.

"The whisky industry as a whole is currently thriving and attracting new investment. With two new distilleries scheduled to open in the North East - one of those in my constituency, near Huntly, I hope this jump in excise duty, on top of inflation, will not compromise investment and jobs or dent confidence in the sector which plays such an important role in the Scottish economy."
