MP Backs Calls to Reduce Easter Egg Packaging

12.14.28pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 17th Mar 2008

Malcolm Bruce, MP for Gordon has called on manufacturers to reduce the amount of unnecessary packaging used in their products. Mr Bruce voiced his concerns over excess packaging in the run up to Easter and pledged to personally take action in avoiding products with excess packaging in order to cut down on waste.

Cadbury's Event

Malcolm Bruce has called on manufacturers to reduce unnecessary packaging in their products.

Malcolm Bruce said:

"Easter is a time of year synonymous with excess packaging. Many eggs come surrounded in plastic and cardboard which is simply thrown away.

"Whilst it is important for us all to recycle these products it is far better not to produce this packaging in the first place. This is where we the consumer can make an impact through our own shopping choices.

"This Easter the confectioners Cadbury's has launched an eco-egg with reduced packaging. They claim that this will reduce the amount of plastic used by 247 tonnes and cardboard by 115 tonnes, saving over 2,000 trees. If other companies follow suit the results would be significant in saving energy and avoiding excess waste."
