Biography

Having fought the North Angus and Mearns seat in October 1974, and West Aberdeenshire in May 1979, Malcolm was elected MP for Gordon in June 1983.

Malcolm joined the Liberal Party at the age of 17 and was President of the Liberal Club at St. Andrews. He went on to do an MSc in Marketing at Strathclyde University. In 1995, he was called to the bar (Gray's Inn). He went on to establish Aberdeen Petroleum Publishing, with a partner, in 1981.

Malcolm is the author of pamphlets on energy and rural development and was, from February 1986 - February 1989, Rector of Dundee University. He is President of the Grampian Branch and a National Vice President of the National Deaf Children's Society, and a Vice President of the Combined Heat & Power Association. Malcolm is also a former President and current Vice-President of GLOBE International (Global Legislators Organisation for a Balanced Environment).

Malcolm is currently Chair of the influential International Development Select Committee. He is a former leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and is now President of the Scottish Party. Malcolm has held a number of high profile Party spokesmanships including Trade and Industry, Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and Treasury. He has also been a member of the Scottish Affairs Select Committee, the Trade and Industry Select Committee, the Committee for Standards and Privileges and the Treasury Select Committee. He was made a Privy Councillor in 2006 by invitation of Her Majesty the Queen.
